Accessibility

This document outlines accessibility features, illustrates limitations, and provides recommendations for optimal viewing of Mater Online.

Resolution

The minimum supported resolution for this site in visual browsers is 800600 with 16 colours (the site is also navigable in grayscale).

The recommended resolution for viewing this site in visual browsers is 1024768 in 32bit colour.

Visual Design

This site makes use of the following visual design features:

  • This site uses CSS for visual layout. For optimal viewing, it is recommended that you use a browser with CSS2 support, such as Internet Explorer 5.5 or better, or Mozilla Firefox. This site has been tested and is functional in Internet Explorer 5.5, 6 and Mozilla Firefox 1.0.7.
  • This site uses relative font sizes, compatible with the user-specified text size option in visual browsers. The recommended text size for viewing this site in a visual browser is medium or 100%.
  • If your browser or browsing device does not support stylesheets, the content of each page will still be readable.
  • The first time an abbreviation or an acronym is used in a page, it is identified with either an <abbr> tag or an <acronym> tag respectively. This displays as a dotted or a dashed orange underline in visual browsers. When the user places their pointer over an <abbr> or an <acronym>, a tooltip will display the corresponding definition.

Access keys

Most browsers provide support for jumping to specific links by typing keys defined on the web site. In Windows, you can press (and hold) Alt + an access key; in MacOS, you can press (and hold) Control + an access key; and in Linux (Gnome), you can press (and hold) Control + Alt + an access key. Please note, to access your browsers File menu in Windows, you should press and release the Alt key before pressing the shortcut key.

All pages on this site define the following access keys:

  • Access key 1: Home
  • Access key 29: Breadcrumbs
  • Access key A: Accessibility
  • Access key C: Copyright
  • Access key E: Services
  • Access key O: Contact
  • Access key P: Privacy
  • Access key S: Staff

Standards compliance

It is my belief that standards compliance is an integral part of creating functional and accessible websites. As a result, the pages on this site adhere to the following standards:

  • All pages on this site adhere to the WCAG. This is based on a determination; many accessibility features can be measured, but many can not. All the pages in this site have been reviewed using the guidelines, and we believe they are all in compliance.
  • All pages on this site are valid HTML. This is not a determination; a HTML parser can determine with 100% accuracy whether a page is valid. For example, check this page for validity.
  • All of the style sheets on this site validate as CSS2. This is not a determination; a CSS parser can determine with 100% accuracy whether a sheet is valid CSS. For example, check this style sheet for CSS validity.
  • All pages on this site use structured semantic markup. <h1> tags are used for the page heading, <h2> tags for main headings, <h3> tags for subheadings, <li> tags for list items, et cetera.
